6.1 Provision of Resources

The organization shall determine and provide the resources needed

  • to implement and maintain the quality management system and continually improve its effectiveness, and
  • to enhance customer satisfaction by meeting customer requirements.

From BS EN ISO 9001:2000

The requirements in this clause are straightforward. Clauses 4 and 5 addressed quality planning and management's responsibility to implement the system-now Clause 6 outlines the requirements to provide resources to carry out the plan.

In a nutshell, organizations must dedicate resources (staff, equipment, tools, materials, information and money) in a reasonable timeframe to establish and improve the quality management system and enhance customer satisfaction by meeting customer requirements. While this may seem like an easy concept to follow, it often proves to be one of the most difficult for an organization seeking registration. Resource management is an ongoing issue in every organization and something that needs to be continuously planned for in the quality management system.

From an auditing perspective, this is an area that will be checked in many places. First, just as in the 1994 standard, an auditor will look for a statement that commits management to providing adequate resources in areas such as training, technology, personnel and other relevant spheres of the business.
