7.4.3 Verification of purchased product

7.4.3 Verification of purchased product

The organization shall establish and implement the inspection or other activities necessary for ensuring that purchased product meets specified purchase requirements.

Where the organization or its customer intends to perform verification at the supplier’s premises, the organization shall state the intended verification arrangements and method of product release in the purchasing information.

(from BS EN ISO 9001:2000)

Suppliers represent an essential link to the quality delivery line. If suppliers ship you the wrong item and you accept it into your stock, you may have just created nonconforming product for your customer, which is obviously undesirable.

This clause is streamlined into two concise paragraphs. In short, you must ensure that all material coming into your company meets your requirements. This may be by inspection, certificates of conformity, etc. You decide what you require for verification of conformance, and this must be planned and implemented effectively.

Additionally, if you are carrying out an inspection, consider how much control is in place at the supplier’s premises, so, in the example of a certificate of conformity, you know whether an incoming inspection could be streamlined or intensified as needed.

Although not required, it is encouraged to have a procedure and documentation for this process and the product’s release. For example, if someone is responsible for final receiving and inspection of the product before it is accepted and that person is required to sign for it, there is a feeling of accountability with that authorization to make sure it is right.
